At least 60 people have been killed and dozens of workers remain trapped after a landslide and collapse at the Al-Zaraa gold mine near the city of Al-Nuhud in Sudan’s West Kordofan state.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that international news agencies cited victims and local sources involved in rescue efforts as saying this.
According to the reports, a collapse in one of the shafts at the artisanal gold mine triggered a chain reaction, causing adjacent shafts to cave in as well. The lack of heavy equipment at the site and the area’s control by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have forced local miners to conduct search and rescue operations under difficult conditions using basic tools. More than 60 bodies have reportedly been recovered from the rubble, and the death toll could rise.
Sudan’s ongoing military conflict and severe economic crisis have forced much of the population to work in illegal gold mines where safety rules are not observed. Collapses are frequently reported in the region’s mine shafts, many of which fail to meet basic technical safety standards.
