Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has stressed the importance of players staying in control emotionally ahead of the club’s English Premier League eighth-round match against Tottenham.
“We could have performed better in matches. I think a lot depends on managing emotions and the flow of the game. If you focus on what you have to do and are prepared for what may happen, you usually make fewer mistakes and do not overreact to certain situations.
“For me, maintaining emotional control and dealing with situations as they arise is a fundamental part of the game. When the game speeds up, we stay calm: I do not lose my composure, pick up needless yellow cards or allow my team to concede an unnecessary penalty. We have to prepare for matches to manage these situations better,” Alonso said at a news conference.
Chelsea are fourth in the standings with 13 points. Tottenham, on six points, are 17th.
The match will kick off on October 24 at 20:30 Baku time.
