Eleven people were injured in a shooting near a school in Turgutlu district of Manisa province in western Turkey.
According to the Manisa Governor’s Office, the incident occurred at 7:59 a.m. local time on Tuesday near Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. Police officers, medical teams and emergency services were dispatched to the scene.
Students among those injured
Local media reported that students were among those injured and that two of them were in serious condition. Security measures were tightened around the school.
The governor’s office said police had detained a person suspected of carrying out the armed attack and launched an investigation. The motive for the attack remains unknown.
Footage from the scene released
Footage shared on social media shows a young man carrying what appears to be a rifle on a street near the school. Another video shows a man running in the area.
Other footage recorded outside the school shows police officers detaining and escorting away a man wearing a white shirt, while people filmed the incident on their phones from behind the school fence.
Officials travel to the scene
Turkey’s Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci and Education Minister Yusuf Tekin were traveling to the scene in Manisa.
The incident occurred several months after two fatal school shootings in Turkey in April. Those incidents caused widespread concern in the country and increased calls for stronger security measures at schools.
Additional measures were subsequently introduced for the 2026-2027 academic year, including tighter controls on firearms. The ongoing investigation is examining how the suspect obtained the weapon and what prompted the attack.
