Yemen’s Houthi group said on Monday evening that it had targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a ballistic missile and the Khamis Mushait air base in southern Saudi Arabia with a drone.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement on “X” that the group’s missile strike on the airport was “accurate.”
Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis toward Riyadh. It provided no further details.
Saudi Civil Defense announced that the danger in Riyadh had passed, minutes after issuing an early warning about a potential threat.
Saree also claimed the drone attack on the Khamis Mushait air base had scored a “direct hit.” Saudi Arabia had not immediately commented on that claim.
The spokesman renewed the group’s warning to airlines, employees and travelers not to use Saudi airports or airspace, which he described as “unsafe.” He exempted airports and airspace in Mecca and Medina.
Saudi Arabia has faced a series of attacks on airports and civilian facilities in recent days amid an escalating military confrontation with the Houthis.
