US President Donald Trump said Saturday that the United States may join Saudi strikes against the Houthis in Yemen after an attack on an airport in Riyadh.
Asked by reporters whether he had decided to take part, Trump said the United States would consider the option and make a decision after learning about the latest attack. He added that Washington would act quickly.
King Khalid International Airport temporarily suspended operations on Saturday after an attack that left several people injured, according to Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation. The authority said the incident took place in the afternoon and that officials were still determining the number of injured people.
The US and UK embassies in Saudi Arabia urged their citizens to avoid the airport, citing security risks and possible travel disruptions.
Saudi authorities said Friday that three citizens were killed and others injured in two attacks on Thursday targeting facilities at King Khalid International Airport and a Saudi Arabian Airlines aircraft. Airport operations later resumed, and air traffic returned to normal, the civil aviation authority said.
The Houthis have claimed responsibility for several missile and drone attacks on King Khalid International Airport and other Saudi airports in recent days.
Yemen has been at war since the Houthis took control of the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in September 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in March 2015 in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
