Emergency authorities ordered residents within a 1.6-kilometer (1-mile) radius of an industrial area in Toledo, Ohio, to evacuate late Tuesday after a hazardous materials leak, Anadolu Agency reported.
The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department told people near Enterprise Boulevard and Progress Avenue to leave immediately. The release began at 10:48 p.m. local time Tuesday (0248 GMT Wednesday).
The incident took place at the “Sterling Pipe and Tube” facility, which was evacuated, Fire Department spokesperson Pvt. Sheldon Collins said, according to local media outlet WTOL11.
No injuries or deaths have been reported, and emergency personnel confirmed there was no explosion.
Officials have not confirmed which chemical was released. Specialized hazardous materials teams continued monitoring the site overnight.
The department instructed people to shelter indoors, close all windows and doors, and switch off ventilation systems that bring in outside air. The city said the evacuation zone includes the Raintree Village and Alexis Addition neighborhoods.
Authorities set up a temporary shelter at Shoreland Elementary School. The “Red Cross” and public transit buses gathered at a nearby parking lot on Alexis Road to assist displaced residents.
