European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that it is premature to lift sanctions against Iran, emphasizing that Tehran must first implement fundamental reforms.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Commission President made these remarks during a speech in Berlin. She clarified the European Union's current position on the restrictive measures, noting that the sanctions were primarily imposed in response to the Iranian authorities' policies toward their own population.

Von der Leyen underscored that the removal of these restrictions is impossible without fundamental changes within the country. She noted that the issue of lifting sanctions could only be reconsidered following the implementation of serious reforms and verifiable shifts in the government's approach to human rights and domestic policy.

The European Union has progressively tightened its sanctions regime against Iran in recent years, targeting individuals and entities involved in the suppression of civil liberties and human rights violations. These measures typically include asset freezes, travel bans, and prohibitions on the export of technology that could be used for internal repression. The international community remains focused on the situation in Iran, with the EU maintaining that any easing of economic or political pressure is strictly contingent upon Tehran meeting international standards regarding the treatment of its citizens.
