State Department warns of detention risks and internet outages

The US Department of State has issued an urgent security alert calling on all American citizens in Iran to depart the country immediately, warning that they should not expect any assistance from Washington.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets, that the advisory emphasizes the critical nature of the current security environment.

“US citizens should take into account that internet disruptions may continue, plan for alternative means of communication, and, if safe, consider crossing by land from Iran into Armenia or Türkiye,” the warning stated.

The alert further noted that US citizens in Iran face serious risks of interrogation, detention, and arrest. It claimed that simply possessing a US passport could be grounds for detention, while dual nationals were informed they must leave the country using only their Iranian passports. Those unable to leave the country were advised to find a secure area within their residence or another safe building and to stockpile food, water, medicine, and other essential supplies.

This escalation in travel warnings comes amid long-standing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Tehran. The US has not maintained formal diplomatic relations with Iran since 1980, following the Iranian Revolution. Consequently, the US government has no consular presence in the country to provide emergency services to its citizens, often relying on the Swiss Embassy in Tehran as a protecting power for limited administrative assistance. Under the administration of US President Donald Trump, the United States has maintained a firm stance regarding regional security and the protection of American nationals abroad.
