US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on Mexico to take more decisive actions in combating illegal migration, fentanyl smuggling, and the operations of drug cartels. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the discussion took place during a meeting in Washington between Rubio and Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Alvarez.
During the talks, Secretary Rubio emphasized the urgent need for concrete measures to end illegal migration and prevent the influx of fentanyl and other illicit narcotics into the United States. He further urged the Mexican side to prioritize the dismantling of foreign terrorist organizations and drug cartels, specifically calling for the disarmament of these criminal groups.
According to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting also covered progress in bilateral security cooperation, specifically addressing the challenges of drug and arms smuggling, as well as the broader fight against transnational organized crime. Minister Velasco underscored that such cooperation must be rooted in mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, shared responsibility, and trust.
The two officials also reviewed current outcomes regarding illegal migration flows and discussed the protection of the rights of Mexican citizens residing in the United States during migration processes. This high-level engagement highlights the ongoing complexities in US-Mexico relations, particularly as the administration of US President Donald Trump continues to prioritize border security and the mitigation of the opioid crisis, which remains a critical public health and national security issue for the United States.
