According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the new policy intends to revoke the "non-immigrant" visas of individuals who entered the United States on short-term visitor visas and subsequently applied for asylum for permanent residency.
While the State Department has not disclosed an exact figure, reports in US media suggest the decision will apply to B1 and B2 visas issued between 2016 and 2026. It is projected that this measure could affect approximately 200,000 individuals. Officials clarified that the revocation of visas does not automatically imply the immediate deportation of these individuals; rather, those currently undergoing asylum proceedings may lose their visitor status, and their migration categories will be subject to re-evaluation.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau stated that the country's asylum system has long been overburdened by unfounded and invalid applications. Officials emphasize that the primary objective of this decision is to strengthen national security and ensure the integrity of the immigration process. Meanwhile, human rights organizations have protested the planned move, arguing that it raises significant concerns regarding due process and the rights of asylum seekers.
