US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced the creation of a new four-star combatant command focused on autonomous and robotic warfare, describing the move as a major transformation in the military’s approach to future conflicts.
“Today at my direction, we are announcing the creation of Autonomous Warfare Command, or AutoWarCom,” Hegseth said on Wednesday during a State of the Force address to junior officers and enlisted leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.
New command to expand autonomous capabilities
According to the source report, the new command will have authorities similar to those of the military services and will be responsible for rapidly expanding autonomous and robotic capabilities throughout the joint force.
Hegseth said the initiative formed part of “the fastest peacetime shift” in modern military history, as autonomous systems and artificial intelligence play an increasingly important role in combat operations.
A four-star commander will be selected to lead AutoWarCom and oversee its expansion across the US military, the defense secretary said.
Leaders appointed during transition
Until the commander is appointed, Hegseth named Owen West and Navy SEAL Senior Chief Max Strasiser to guide the project during the next year.
Hegseth calls for additional funding
Hegseth also called for higher defense spending, arguing that the pace of weapons production and technological development requires additional funding from Congress.
“We’re now getting weapons faster than ever before,” he said, urging Congress to approve a $350 billion reconciliation package for US service members.
