US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth plans to reduce by 20% the number of positions designated for generals and admirals, doubling an earlier reduction target, Fox News reported on Tuesday.
Hegseth approved plans earlier this month directing the Army, Navy, Air Force and joint military pool to implement the cuts by Jan. 1, 2027, the report said, citing internal memos it reviewed.
Cut applies to designated positions
The latest target concerns billets — positions reserved for general and flag officers — rather than the across-the-board removal of 20% of officers currently serving in those ranks, according to a Pentagon source cited by the news channel.
Some positions will be downgraded instead of eliminated. This would allow colonels and Navy captains to fill posts previously designated for general and flag officers.
Announcement expected at force address
Hegseth is expected to announce the changes on Wednesday during his State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.
