The deployment of jet-powered Shahed drones by Russian forces against Ukraine has created new challenges for Kyiv's air defense capabilities. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the high speed of these drones, known in Russia as "Geran," significantly reduces the reaction time for Ukraine's existing air defense systems.
Reports indicate that these jet-powered drones can reach speeds of approximately 500 km/h. In response, Ukrainian defense companies have begun developing faster and more agile "interceptor" drones to counter this threat.
At the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom, the Ukrainian company SkyFall unveiled its new "P1-SUN Jetkiller" model. According to the company, this drone can reach speeds of 370 km/h. The manufacturer stated that while development began only three months ago, the system has already been tested in combat conditions and has successfully destroyed several jet-powered Shahed drones. The company plans to begin mass production in August.
Other Ukrainian firms are also advancing similar technologies. The company General Cherry is currently upgrading its "Bullet" interceptor drone to increase its speed beyond 400 km/h, with testing expected in August and mass production slated for September. Meanwhile, Firebolt Engineering, in collaboration with the UK-based Dynamic Propulsion, is working on the "Griffen" jet interceptor drone. This system, which currently boasts a speed of 350 km/h, has reportedly already conducted its first successful interception mission.
Military experts emphasize that combating jet-powered drones requires not only increased speed but also a reduction in production costs. Ukraine is prioritizing the creation of accessible, mass-producible defense systems to counter the ongoing wave of Russian drone attacks. The shift toward specialized interceptor drones marks a significant evolution in the tactical landscape of the conflict, as both sides continue to innovate in the realm of unmanned aerial warfare.
