US Senator Chris Murphy was hospitalized after suffering a stroke, his office said Sunday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son’s hockey game and was taken to a local hospital, where doctors found he had suffered a stroke, Allison Herwitt, his chief of staff, said. Murphy is 53.
He was later transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for continued medical observation and is “responding well to treatment,” Herwitt said. She added that his physicians were encouraged by his condition and that he was “awake and alert.” His team remains optimistic about a full recovery.
Asked about Murphy’s condition, US President Donald Trump expressed concern.
“How bad is it? We don’t like to hear a thing like that. He’s a young guy. Nobody wants to have that,” Trump told reporters.
Murphy has represented Connecticut in the US Senate since 2013 and is a prominent member of the Democratic caucus.
