The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has begun establishing alternative routes for energy exports and trade in response to the risks posed by regional tensions involving Iran.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, this announcement was made by Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE President. He emphasized that the country will not allow its energy exports or trade and economic activities to be compromised under any circumstances.
Gargash stated that the UAE is expanding the capacity of its ports on the eastern coast while simultaneously developing pipelines, railway infrastructure, and alternative trade corridors. These strategic initiatives are designed to insulate the nation's economy from potential disruptions in the Persian Gulf.
Regarding diplomatic relations, Gargash noted that while restoring functional ties with Iran is possible and necessary, rebuilding trust with neighboring countries could take decades. "It is possible to restore functional relations with Iran, and it must be done. However, the restoration of trust is an entirely different matter," he emphasized.
Gargash also addressed the collective response of Gulf nations to Iranian actions, noting that while regional countries have long shared a common understanding regarding the nature of the threat posed by Iran, they have struggled to translate this shared awareness into sufficiently coordinated and strategic action.
It is worth noting that the UAE, which has historically been one of Iran's key economic partners, suspended all financial and economic operations with Tehran in August. Abu Dhabi justified this decision citing Iran's military escalation and ongoing missile threats in the region.
The UAE's pivot toward diversifying its logistics and energy infrastructure reflects a broader trend among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states to enhance national security and economic resilience in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment.
