Anwar Gargash, the senior advisor to the UAE President, has warned that any potential Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz could lead to severe global consequences.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the advisor made these remarks during a recent policy address regarding regional security.

Gargash noted that any unilateral control over the Strait of Hormuz would set a dangerous precedent, emphasizing that the situation could be heavily politicized by Tehran. According to the advisor, disruptions in the strait would trigger serious repercussions not only for the region but also for Europe, particularly concerning energy security and international trade routes.

The advisor stated that the UAE recognizes Iran's willingness to utilize all available leverage, noting that Tehran's nuclear program has already become one of the primary threats to the country. He emphasized that a new confrontation between US President Donald Trump and Iran would further aggravate the situation. While affirming that the UAE favors a political solution, Gargash added that any future agreement must be robust enough to prevent the emergence of new problems.

“It is essential to find a diplomatic path. However, this should not come at the cost of creating more complications in the future,” he stated. Gargash also highlighted that relations with the United States play a pivotal role in the security policy of Gulf nations, describing cooperation with Washington as the “backbone” of national defense.

Touching upon Europe's potential role, the advisor mentioned that any European initiative regarding the Strait of Hormuz could only become relevant after the current conflicts are resolved. Furthermore, he revealed that the UAE is facing economic losses due to OPEC production restrictions and has considered the possibility of withdrawing from the organization over the past three years.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most vital oil transit chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes daily. Located between Oman and Iran, it connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Given its strategic importance, any instability in the area typically results in immediate fluctuations in global energy prices and heightened maritime security concerns for the international community.
