Two Indian nationals are missing after a drone attack on a tanker off Oman’s coast, while nine other crew members were rescued, Indian Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said Sunday.
The tanker, MT Petro Dolphin, was carrying 11 Indian seafarers when it was attacked at Sohar Anchorage on Oct. 11, Sonowal said in a post on “X”. He said the nine rescued crew members were safe.
Search and rescue operations are under way with the local coast guard. Sonowal said Indian authorities were coordinating with relevant officials to support the effort to locate the missing crew members.
Regional tensions have remained high since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran retaliated against Israeli targets and US military facilities across the region, while the conflict has severely disrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy supplies.
Iran has linked the full reopening of the strait to measures including an end to hostilities, sanctions relief, the release of frozen assets and the implementation of commitments by Washington.
At least 16 Indian seafarers have been killed since the war began in February, according to the report.
