New updates have been released regarding Turkey's national combat aircraft project, known as KAAN. Two new prototypes developed under the project have been unveiled to the public for the first time.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, these new platforms are equipped with several technical advancements, distinguishing them from the initial model that conducted its maiden test flight last year.
Reports indicate that the KAAN-1 prototype, developed following the successful flight tests of the KAAN-0 model, is continuing its ground testing phase. The aircraft has now successfully completed its taxi test. Since being rolled out of the hangar on March 17, 2023, the platform has been prepared for flight by Turkish engineers and is expected to commence test flights in the near future.
The technical specifications of the indigenously designed KAAN are notable. The aircraft features a wingspan of 14 meters, a height of 6 meters, and a length of 21 meters. The single-seat combat aircraft is distinguished by its twin-engine system, high maneuverability, a specialized airframe designed to reduce radar cross-section, and internal weapons carriage capabilities.
It has been reported that KAAN will be equipped with modern electronic warfare systems and will be capable of operating in an integrated manner with unmanned aerial vehicles and other aerial surveillance platforms. Furthermore, the aircraft is expected to feature artificial intelligence and neural network support, enabling it to deliver precision strikes from internal weapons bays at supersonic speeds.
The KAAN project represents a significant milestone in Turkey's defense industry, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign military hardware. On May 1, 2023, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed the fuselage of the national combat aircraft, announcing that the name "KAAN" was proposed by MHP leader Devlet Bahceli.
