Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş addressed the “Assessment meeting on the fourth legislative year of the 28th term” held in Ankara, outlining parliament’s position on the domestic political agenda, security strategies and issues of international law.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the speaker said parliament would actively exercise its independent monitoring and legislative functions during the new working session.
The TBMM speaker said the necessary legislative steps would be taken once parliament resumes its work. Kurtulmuş stressed that a special Monitoring Commission would be quickly established by parliament as part of the “Terror-Free Turkey” goal. The commission will directly oversee the progress of the process, including its security and integration stages, and fulfill its monitoring and supervisory responsibilities under the law.
Referring to ongoing investigations and background inquiries, Kurtulmuş emphasized the importance of applying legal principles equally to everyone. He said investigations must be completed transparently, regardless of a person’s status or position, and that those found responsible must be held accountable before the courts.
Commenting on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to New York in connection with the UN General Assembly, the TBMM speaker said Netanyahu was facing a difficult situation amid international protests. Kurtulmuş said those who commit crimes against humanity cannot evade international justice and legal responsibility.
Addressing claims about early elections on the political agenda, the parliamentary speaker said there were currently neither suitable conditions nor an appropriate time for such a move. Numan Kurtulmuş said the TBMM was preparing for elections to be held on schedule. He added that, under the Constitution and legislation, any decision to hold early elections depended exclusively on the will of the TBMM and the outcome of a parliamentary vote.
