The United States has temporarily frozen ammunition sales to its strategic allies as it seeks to fully replenish its military arsenal and stockpiles. US President Donald Trump made the announcement in an exclusive interview with Newsmax.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Trump said existing ammunition stocks are currently being kept in the country because US domestic security needs take priority.
The president said allied countries would again be permitted to buy ammunition from the United States only after national military stockpiles had been fully replenished.
The White House chief sharply criticized the foreign policy of his predecessor, Joe Biden, calling the large-scale military assistance provided to Ukraine free of charge a strategic mistake. Trump said his administration was requiring US allies and partners in Europe to pay the full cost of American weapons and military equipment. However, the US president did not say when deliveries would resume.
Trump also said the re-equipment of the armed forces was progressing rapidly. He said a record number of missiles for Patriot air defense systems had been purchased and that deliveries of Tomahawk cruise missiles had also reached a record level.
The US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) suspended deliveries of some air defense missiles and precision-guided munitions to Ukraine on July 1, 2025, citing concerns that national stockpiles had fallen to critically low levels. As of August 2026, the monthly volume of US weapons deliveries to Kyiv had fallen to $266 million, about five times lower than during Biden’s presidency.
Meanwhile, The Atlantic reported in an article published on October 13 that Washington had threatened to completely freeze arms sales to Ukraine through European countries. According to the report, some officials close to Trump had also proposed halting intelligence-sharing with the Kyiv administration.
