The Trump administration has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska’s Senate race if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan loses, arguing that another candidate with the same name could confuse voters.
The Justice Department filed the lawsuit on Thursday, saying voters might mistakenly cast their ballots for the wrong candidate, according to BBC World.
Polls suggest the contest between Sullivan and Democratic candidate Mary Peltola is close, with Peltola holding a narrow lead.
The government is asking a judge to bar Alaska from certifying the results if Senator Sullivan loses by a margin smaller than the other Dan Sullivan’s vote total.
Previous attempts to remove the other Sullivan, a retired teacher, from the ballot have been rejected by the Alaska Supreme Court.
Senator Sullivan will appear on the ballot as the Republican incumbent. Under Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system, voters who are unsure could select both candidates.
