At least 12 people have been killed as Tropical Storm "Penha" triggered torrential rains, widespread flooding, and devastating landslides across the Philippines.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that according to Juni Castillo, spokesperson for the country's Civil Defense Office, the natural disaster has resulted in significant casualties and property damage.

The Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council released an official statement highlighting the following impact of the storm:

  • Approximately 460,000 people have been affected by the disaster;
  • 16,528 families have been evacuated to safer areas;
  • Heavy rains and floodwaters have caused severe damage to regional infrastructure.

The Philippines is one of the world's most disaster-prone nations, frequently struck by an average of 20 typhoons and tropical storms annually. These weather events often lead to catastrophic flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous and coastal regions. The country's location along the Pacific typhoon belt makes it highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters, necessitating constant vigilance. Currently, rescue operations and efforts to mitigate the consequences of the storm are ongoing in the affected areas, while officials have urged the population to remain cautious and adhere to safety protocols.
