Police have arrested a 15-year-old in connection with a shooting in Tallahassee, Florida, that injured 12 people on Saturday, BBC World reported.

The shooting happened at about 20:00 local time (01:00 GMT on Sunday) near an American football stadium where a university game had recently been played.

Eleven people were injured by gunfire, while another hurt their ankle while fleeing, local police said. Six of the victims were children.

Anthony Rivers III has been charged with 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent.

Police said the shooting followed an altercation involving people who knew one another. Additional arrests were possible, they said, adding that none of the victims appeared to have been the intended targets.

“What should have been a weekend of celebration in our community instead became a night of fear and violence for the victims and their families,” Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said.

“We remain committed to holding those responsible accountable and getting answers for every family impacted by this tragedy.”

Police said on Sunday that six people were in hospital, including one in critical condition. Five people had been released.

Revell told a news conference on Sunday that officers had to carry victims in their arms to emergency responders because crowds from the football game were in the area.
