A three-year-old child has undergone a successful eight-hour microsurgical operation to reattach a hand severely injured in a meat grinder accident.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Ministry of Health, that the procedure was performed at the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Clinic of the State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors approximately seven hours after the incident occurred.
The trauma resulted in the complete amputation of the child's left wrist and metacarpals, as well as the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers at the level of the metacarpophalangeal joints.
The complex surgery, conducted by a team of five surgeons, lasted approximately eight hours. Following the procedure, the patient was kept under intensive monitoring in the intensive care unit for 24 hours before being transferred to a general ward two days later. Currently, the patient's condition is reported as stable.
Microsurgery of this complexity represents a significant advancement in medical capabilities within Azerbaijan. Such procedures require specialized equipment and highly trained surgical teams capable of reconnecting delicate nerves, blood vessels, and tendons to restore functionality to severed limbs, a critical field in modern reconstructive medicine.
