A 72-year-old South Korean national has been arrested in Japan for residing in the country illegally for over three decades.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, police officers in Shizuoka Prefecture apprehended the individual after discovering he had entered Japan in 1993 on a 15-day tourist visa and had not departed since. During preliminary investigations, it was revealed that the man used his brother's passport to enter the country. In his statement to the police, the suspect admitted to the act, explaining that he had moved to Japan with the hope of finding higher-paying employment.
The legal investigation into the matter is currently ongoing. While Japan's immigration laws underwent significant revisions in 2000 to impose stricter penalties on visa overstays, the suspect faces potential charges related to both his prolonged illegal residency and the fraudulent use of travel documents. Authorities are now evaluating the case to determine the appropriate legal consequences for the immigration violations and document fraud involved.
