Russia has launched its largest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since spring, primarily targeting Kyiv and the surrounding region, Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi said, according to the source report.
At least six people were killed and 33 others injured in overnight attacks across the country, local authorities reported. A child was among those killed in the Kyiv region.
The strikes disrupted electricity supplies, with Ukraine’s largest private energy company, “DTEK”, saying power had been restored to up to 8,000 homes after what it described as “a difficult night” for the capital.
Power cuts reported in several regions
Russia’s Defence Ministry said the Trypilska power station, Kyiv’s largest electricity supplier, was among its targets. Ukrainian officials have not confirmed that claim.
“Since the summer, there has effectively not been a single day without enemy attacks on our energy infrastructure,” Koretskyi said in a statement on Telegram. He added that an attack of this scale was the first since the end of the previous heating season.
Eleven Ukrainian regions were attacked overnight, with residential buildings, social infrastructure, civilian enterprises and railway facilities also hit, the prime minister said.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said critical infrastructure was struck in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad and Rivne regions.
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said some households in the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions remained without electricity on Wednesday. State-owned grid operator “Ukrenergo” urged residents to avoid using high-power electrical appliances between 10:00 and 16:00 local time because electricity supplies were below normal levels.
Casualties reported in Kyiv and other regions
Kyiv residents awoke to thick, acrid smoke after a night of explosions. An air-raid alert remained in force, while the sound of air-defence fire could be heard in the distance. Residents in several districts were advised to keep their windows closed until the smoke dispersed.
Kyiv regional Governor Timur Tkachenko said the body of a child had been recovered from the rubble of a house.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said three people had been killed in the capital, including a worker from a Ukrainian utility company who died at a warehouse. It was unclear whether the figure included the child reported dead in the region.
Two people were killed in the north-eastern Sumy region, Governor Oleh Hryhorov said. Another person died in a Russian drone attack in the Mykolaiv region, acting regional Governor Heorhiy Reshetilov said.
Ukraine has faced repeated Russian attacks on its power grid during each winter since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. Russia currently controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory.
