Sabah lost 2-1 to German club Borussia Dortmund in the third round of the UEFA Champions League league phase. Azerbaijan U-18 head coach Mahmud Gurbanov said the Baku side had matched its opponent throughout the contest.
Gurbanov said Sabah played with confidence and without being intimidated by the opponent’s name, league or players. In his view, the team performed better against Borussia Dortmund than it had against Slavia. Both sides played openly, launched attacks and had shots on goal. Sabah also had a chance to earn points.
The coach said Sabah had improved its attacking and defensive play over the course of a week. Gurbanov praised the performances of Kahim Parris, Coy-Lens Mikels, Velko Simic, Steve Solvet and Umarali Rahmonaliyev, who played in central defense. He said the visitors were favorites because of the level of their league and players.
According to Gurbanov, Sabah played on equal terms with Borussia Dortmund for much of the match, but lacked a little quality. The Baku club did not sit back, maintained the pace for 90 minutes and kept attacking in search of a goal until the final minute. Sabah will play its next match away to Norwegian club Viking on Nov. 4.
