A major incident was declared on Sunday in Whelford, a village near RAF Fairford in western England, after several men were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, according to the BBC.
Gloucestershire Police said a number of properties were evacuated as emergency services investigated the incident. Residents were taken to a leisure centre while a cordon was established around the affected area.
RAF Fairford hosts operations by the United States Air Force. Police said they believed the incident was contained and urged the public to avoid the area.
Army explosives team examines vehicles
“The Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team is currently examining a number of vehicles,” Gloucestershire Police said.
A large emergency services presence was reported at the scene, including a Hazardous Area Response Team, which provides specialist medical support during incidents involving hazardous materials and other complex emergencies.
Police said investigations remained ongoing. The force did not provide further details about the arrests or the suspected offences.
