UK premier says Iran may be linked to suspected plot near RAF base

There is a “strong indication” that Iran played a role in a suspected terror plot near Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in south-west England, the UK prime minister said on Wednesday.

“There is indeed a strong indication that Iran played a part,” Andy Burnham told Sky News.

Burnham cautioned, however, that the case remained a complex and serious police investigation and said he could not provide further details at this stage.

Five men arrested

Five men from London, aged between 23 and 25, have been arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism, according to the report.

The incident began when a farmer found three vans blocking a road near the RAF base in Gloucestershire at about 1:30 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Suspect reportedly contacted authorities

It later emerged that one of the suspects had contacted authorities about an hour earlier, a development first reported by The Times newspaper.
