NASA’s Curiosity rover has detected small, shallow holes on the surface of Mars in the Valle Grande area of Mount Sharp, where sulfate-rich layers are located.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the structures, approximately 1 centimeter wide, differ from depressions observed previously. No gravel or mineral debris separated by erosion has been recorded around the holes.
The holes’ shallow and relatively wide shape may point to a mechanism different from known weathering processes on Mars. However, scientists have not yet reached a final conclusion about how the structures formed.
According to the Curiosity team, the rover’s onboard MAHLI and Mastcam cameras are being used for the investigation. Close-up images of the area and three-dimensional models of the surface are being analyzed.
In recent days, the rover surpassed the milestone of gaining 1,000 meters in elevation while ascending Mount Sharp. The spacecraft continues to study the chemical composition and weathering characteristics of different rock layers in the region.
Scientists will analyze the available data to determine whether the new structures resulted from a previously unknown erosion process or from distinctive physical properties of the rocks.
