A senior Moroccan government official has stated that combating illegal migration is a shared responsibility requiring commitment from all involved parties.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the official emphasized that Morocco continues to act as a sovereign, reliable, and responsible partner in addressing this complex global challenge.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stressed that Morocco has consistently gone beyond its obligations in managing migration flows. "Our country has never acted under pressure or coercion. Our primary motivation has always been the obligations we have undertaken and a sense of responsibility," the official stated, rejecting claims of external manipulation.
The official highlighted that the cooperation between the Moroccan and Spanish governments serves as a model for effective border management. Despite the complexity of the issue, significant human, technical, and financial resources have been mobilized to achieve tangible results.
According to data provided by the official, authorities successfully prevented 79,000 illegal migration attempts in 2024 and 74,000 attempts in 2025. Furthermore, joint operations conducted during the 2024-2025 period led to the dismantling of 632 human trafficking networks. Additionally, maritime rescue operations during this timeframe saved more than 32,000 migrants from drowning.
Illegal migration remains a critical issue for North African nations, which serve as key transit points for migrants attempting to reach Europe. Morocco's strategic location and its ongoing security cooperation with European Union member states, particularly Spain, play a pivotal role in regional stability and the prevention of human smuggling operations across the Mediterranean.
