French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a sharp response to the tariff threats made by US President Donald Trump, calling for European unity and strategic independence in the face of mounting trade pressures.

"Operative Information Center-OMM", citing The Guardian, reports that Macron described the prospect of such "meaningless aggression" and the resulting trade instability as "madness." The French leader emphasized that to address global imbalances, Europe must become stronger and more strategically autonomous.

The President underscored his preference for international relations governed by the rule of law rather than pressure tactics. "We believe the world needs more economic growth and stability. However, we prefer respect over bullying and the rule of law over brutality. Welcome to Europe; we are happy to see you in France," Macron stated, adding that threatening allies with additional customs duties lacks logic in the current global climate.

This exchange comes amid renewed concerns over transatlantic trade relations following the inauguration of US President Donald Trump in January 2025. Historically, trade tensions between Washington and the European Union have centered on sectors such as automotive manufacturing, digital services, and agricultural exports. Macron’s advocacy for "strategic autonomy" has been a cornerstone of his foreign policy, aimed at reducing Europe's reliance on external powers for its economic and security needs.

It should be noted that prior to this, US President Donald Trump made public private correspondence with Macron. In those messages, the French President had expressed his lack of understanding regarding the American administration's previous policy interests concerning Greenland.
