Azerbaijan U-21 player Lorenzo Mezzotero has named playing for the senior national team as one of his major goals. He made the remarks after his side beat Gibraltar 3-0 in a European Championship qualifying match.
Mezzotero said the team had aimed to surpass the U-21 side’s previous record of nine points. He added that the players were pleased to keep a clean sheet and secure the win.
“Azerbaijan feels like home to me”
Mezzotero, who plays for Italy’s Sampdoria, said he lived in Azerbaijan from the age of six to 12, attended school there and made many friends. He said he considers every call-up to the Azerbaijan national team a great honor.
The player said he regularly features for Sampdoria, scores goals and has made two appearances for the club’s senior team. He added that his current focus is on working hard and continuing to improve.
Mezzotero also aims to play at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He said he knows the tournament will be held in Azerbaijan and wants to keep working toward that goal. The player thanked fans for their support.
