Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, met and discussed an attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Araghchi shared the information on his Telegram channel.
“Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met with the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, in New York on the sidelines of the high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly,” the statement said.
The sides emphasized the importance of diplomacy in managing tensions. “The foreign ministers of the two countries also stressed the need to maintain communication channels between the countries and highlighted the importance of taking necessary bilateral steps to manage relations,” Araghchi wrote.
The officials also exchanged views on developments in Europe and the Middle East and agreed to continue contacts to prevent any escalation of tensions in their relations:
“They also exchanged views on bilateral issues, particularly the unlawful attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, and ways to resolve them.”
The Caspian Sea is a strategically important body of water bordered by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan. Maritime security in the area has broader implications for regional trade, energy routes and relations among the littoral states.
