The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said it had struck an oil tanker sailing under the flag of Togo as it attempted to make an “illegal passage” through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reported the incident Friday morning.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it had received a report of a security incident in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident was reported about 16 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman.
According to UKMTO, the tanker’s crew was reported safe. No environmental impact had been confirmed at the time of reporting.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said his country would not send military assets to the Middle East in a way that could draw it into the conflict related to the war with Iran.
He added that South Korea was considering whether to expand its role in ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key maritime passage linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A significant share of the world’s oil shipments passes through the strait, making security incidents there a matter of international concern.
