Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States takes initial steps to ease military pressure, an unnamed Iranian official told Japan's Kyodo News on Tuesday. Anadolu Agency said it could not independently verify the claim.

The proposal has already been conveyed to Washington through mediators, according to the report. It calls for renewed talks aimed at achieving a permanent end to hostilities between the two countries.

Iran rules out leaders' meeting

The Iranian official ruled out a meeting between President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York this week.

“There is a possibility of moving toward an agreement,” the official said, adding that Washington would need to demonstrate “seriousness and commitment” for diplomacy to advance.

Tensions remain over Strait of Hormuz

The reported offer comes amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran. Negotiations remain stalled over disagreements concerning navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for energy and commodity supplies.

On Feb. 28, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with strikes on Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets.

Following a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire in April, the United States and Iran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding in June. The agreement gave both sides 60 days to discuss a long-term deal.

However, the two countries soon resumed retaliatory attacks. The United States reimposed its military blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz.
