Iran has officially guaranteed safe and unhindered passage for Philippine-linked vessels through the Strait of Hormuz following successful diplomatic negotiations between the two nations. The agreement aims to bolster energy security and ensure the uninterrupted supply of oil to the Philippines.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Philippine Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Theresa Lazaro described the meetings with her Iranian counterparts as highly productive. Under the terms of the agreement, the Iranian side has provided guarantees for the safe, unimpeded, and rapid transit of vessels under the following conditions:

  • Vessels sailing under the Philippine flag;
  • Vessels transporting energy resources destined for the Philippines;
  • Vessels manned by crews including Philippine seafarers.

This strategic agreement is viewed as a significant victory for the Philippines, which holds a substantial share in the global maritime labor market. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most vital maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes daily. For the Philippines, which relies heavily on imported crude oil from the Middle East, securing this passage is critical for national economic stability. The decision is expected to streamline maritime traffic in the region and provide a safety net for the thousands of Philippine sailors working on international tankers.
