Iran is currently discussing new security measures for the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint for global energy supplies.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei addressed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing negotiations with Oman during a weekly press conference held in Tehran.
Reports indicate that the discussions between Iran and Oman are primarily focused on establishing new, temporary maritime routes to ensure the safe passage of vessels through the strait. Baghaei clarified that there are no direct negotiations taking place with the United States. He asserted that as long as Washington continues its policy of maritime blockade and pressure, significant changes in the status quo of the strait are unlikely.
The Iranian official noted that Pakistan is currently fulfilling a mediation role, with Qatar providing support to the process. He further stated that China has expressed concern regarding rising regional tensions and is actively working to prevent further escalation.
Baghaei claimed that the use of US military bases in the region destabilizes the area, posing a threat not only to Iran but to all regional nations. Addressing recent statements from US President Donald Trump regarding Iran, the spokesperson emphasized that Tehran remains committed to defending its positions and national values.
Furthermore, the Foreign Ministry representative addressed reports concerning an incident involving a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea. He noted that while Ukrainian officials have claimed the incident was unintentional, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued conflicting statements. Baghaei stated that Tehran expects clarification from Kyiv regarding the incident and emphasized that necessary measures will be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important oil transit chokepoints, with a significant portion of global petroleum consumption passing through its narrow waters daily. Its strategic importance makes it a frequent focal point for geopolitical tensions involving Iran, regional neighbors, and international powers.
