Iran has confirmed that it held indirect talks with the United States, mediated by Qatar, in New York on the sidelines of a UN General Assembly session.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the Iranian delegation clearly conveyed Tehran’s position and conditions to the US side. He said the contacts were aimed at presenting Iran’s demands for an end to the war on all fronts, a halt to US aggressive actions, the lifting of the naval blockade, an end to the economic war and the release of Iran’s frozen assets.
Iran’s conditions in indirect talks
Baghaei did not disclose the names of those who took part in the talks. However, reports said the delegations were led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
The Iranian official described remarks made by US President Donald Trump about Iran in his address to the UN General Assembly as “repeated accusations.” According to Baghaei, the statements stemmed from “desperation.”
“Threatening the country with military attack is an admission of the nature of the ruling establishment in the United States and of its commission of international crimes,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
Araghchi’s diplomatic meetings
In addition to indirect contacts with the United States, Abbas Araghchi held meetings after arriving in New York on Monday with the foreign ministers of Qatar, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Iraq, Austria, Azerbaijan, Greece, Belarus and France, as well as the European Union’s foreign policy chief.
According to official statements, during meetings with European diplomats, Araghchi criticized their positions on the Israel-US war against Iran and on Tehran’s nuclear program, which the Iranian government says is peaceful in nature.
Peze shkian to attend UN General Assembly
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New York on Tuesday to attend and address the UN General Assembly session and discuss bilateral and global issues with other leaders.
Iranian officials said Tehran would use the annual gathering to state its position on key global and regional issues and safeguard its national interests. Before departing for New York, Pezeshkian said participation in the UN General Assembly was an opportunity to explain the position of the Islamic Republic of Iran and realities in the region, as well as convey the voice of the Iranian people to the international community.
The 2026 UN General Assembly is taking place after the Israel-US war, which began on Feb. 28 and lasted 40 days. The previous session was held in June amid tensions following Israeli-US airstrikes.
