Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned what it called illegal US government measures aimed at restricting Iran’s trade and air links with other countries.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that foreign media outlets have carried the news.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Iraq should take appropriate measures in response to US efforts to restrict Iranian flights.
The ministry’s statement said the US measures violate the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law, particularly respect for national sovereignty, as well as basic human rights norms.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the measures form part of a dangerous policy aimed at undermining friendly relations between neighboring countries.
The statement stressed the deep historical, religious, cultural and people-to-people ties between the peoples of Iran and Iraq. Tehran said restrictions on civilian air links between the two countries run counter to their shared interests and well-being.
According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, restricting air links creates serious difficulties for hundreds of thousands of passengers, pilgrims, patients, students and businesses in both countries and is inconsistent with the nature of strategic relations between Iran and Iraq.
The ministry said it respected Iraq’s national sovereignty and called for appropriate decisions to counter what it described as US economic terrorism.
Tehran also called for flights operated by airlines from both countries to resume normally.
Iraq’s ambassador to Iran has also confirmed that Najaf Airport will reopen to Iranian flights. He said the Iraqi government was making sustained efforts to fully restore air links between the two countries.
Earlier, Reuters reported, citing a source, that a temporary authorization issued by the US Treasury Department would allow Iraqi Airways to operate flights between Iran and Najaf for one month. The airline could subsequently receive a permanent authorization.
