Iranian military authorities have announced the closure of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz to all maritime traffic.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing an unnamed military source reported by Iran's Fars news agency, no vessels are currently permitted to pass through the strait. The source emphasized that control over the waterway is now fully under the authority of the Iranian Armed Forces.
The statement indicated that decisions regarding the reopening of the strait or the continuation of these restrictions will be made based on ongoing security assessments and the national interests of the country.
Tehran has linked this measure to policies pursued by the United States in the region. The military source stated that no changes to the current situation are expected as long as Washington's alleged "hostile activities" continue. Furthermore, the statement asserted that responsibility for any security issues arising in maritime shipping lies with the parties destabilizing the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, serving as the primary route for a significant portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.
