Tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has experienced a sharp decline.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that since February 28, the escalating confrontation between Iran and the US, coupled with ongoing regional instability, is severely impacting maritime transport in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's restrictions on passage through the strait have led to a reduction in tanker movements along this route, which holds critical strategic importance for global energy supplies.
According to data from the Belgium-based vessel tracking firm Kpler, only seven commercial vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz last night. This figure is significantly lower than the daily average of 15 transits recorded over the past 10 days. Reports indicate that of the seven vessels that navigated the strait, four were departing the region, while three were entering.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital chokepoint for global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes through this narrow waterway, making any disruption in traffic a major concern for international energy markets and global economic stability.
