Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi is scheduled to visit Russia later this week, according to reports from TASS. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the visit is expected to take place by the end of the week, focusing on critical nuclear safety and security issues.

The diplomatic mission coincides with Grossi's candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. Official hearings for candidates seeking the UN's top post are slated to begin on April 20. The nomination process for the succession began in November 2025, as the international community prepares for the transition following the conclusion of current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's term on December 31, 2026.

The IAEA, headquartered in Vienna, serves as the world's intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the nuclear field. As the global nuclear watchdog, the agency plays a pivotal role in monitoring nuclear facilities and ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Grossi's visit to Russia is viewed as a significant step in ongoing international efforts to maintain communication channels regarding nuclear safety protocols and regional stability.
