"The Hungarian government has appealed to the US Congress, asking that new US sanctions legislation targeting major buyers of Russian oil and gas not be applied to Hungary."
"Operative Information Center-OMM" reports that Marton Haydu, chairman of the Hungarian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, made the remarks.
"I asked all my interlocutors to support Hungary's efforts to further reduce its dependence on Russian energy carriers and ensure energy supplies from various sources. In addition, I asked for help in ensuring that US punitive measures related to the purchase of Russian energy resources during the transition period would not apply to Hungary. We are building Hungary-US relations on long-term interests and shared values that go beyond the election period," Haydu said.
On Sept. 18, US President Donald Trump signed a bill on tightening sanctions against Russia. The legislation provides, in particular, for additional sanctions against the Russian Federation's trading partners. Under the bill, the United States may impose import tariffs of up to 100% on countries that are major buyers of Russian oil and gas. Hungary is among those countries.
Hungary remains highly reliant on Russian energy supplies, while the European Union has sought to diversify its sources and reduce dependence on Russia. Any new US measures targeting buyers of Russian energy could therefore have significant implications for Budapest's energy policy and trade relations.
