The route of the $580 million “Greenlink” energy project in the United Kingdom has been officially altered following widespread protests from fans of the “Harry Potter” film franchise.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the initial plan for the 125-mile subsea cable route was set to pass directly through the site at Freshwater West beach in Wales, where the iconic character “Dobby” met his end in the film series. The location has since become a significant memorial site for fans worldwide.
Simon Ludlam, head of the project developer Etchea Energy, confirmed that the company received thousands of complaints, calls, and messages after the original plans were made public. Fans demanded that the site, which has become a place of pilgrimage, be preserved out of respect for the character’s legacy.
In response to the public outcry, the engineering team successfully rerouted the cable line. The new path ensures that the memorial dedicated to “Dobby” and its surrounding environment remain undisturbed.
Freshwater West beach, located in southwest Wales, has become a major tourist destination, drawing thousands of visitors annually who come to see the painted stones and messages left in memory of the house-elf. The site gained global recognition following the release of the film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.”
It should be noted that in 2022, the National Trust, which manages the area, issued a warning to visitors to stop leaving socks and other items at the beach to protect the local environment. However, the organization allowed the “Dobby” memorial to remain, acknowledging the deep emotional connection fans have with the location.
