German police have arrested a 60-year-old man suspected of killing two district officials during a routine firearms inspection in Bavaria, authorities said on Friday.
The suspect, a German national, was slightly wounded in the leg when police entered the house where he had barricaded himself, public broadcaster BR reported. A police spokesman said the man admitted firing the fatal shots.
The shooting took place on Thursday afternoon in Berngau, a town of about 2,600 people in southern Germany. The victims, a 45-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, worked for the Neumarkt district administration.
Specialist officers spent hours trying to persuade the suspect to surrender before forcing their way into the house at about 2:30 a.m. on Friday, BR reported. He was taken for medical treatment, and Regensburg criminal police were expected to question him after he had been treated.
