A man accused of stabbing a British toddler at a playground in the French Alps will stand trial on charges including attempted murder, prosecutors have said.

Abdalmasih Hanoun is also charged with armed resistance and attempted murder in connection with injuries to 12 other people during the attack in Le Paquier in June 2023, according to the BBC.

The British child, who was three at the time, was visiting the area with her parents. She suffered one stab wound and was among four children aged between 22 months and three years who were hurt.

Hanoun is due to face trial at the Haute-Savoie Assize Court in Annecy within the next year, the French public prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday.

Prosecutors said he would also answer charges of violence with a weapon, without causing total incapacity for work, against two victims.

A panel of experts assessed Hanoun’s mental state and found that he was not suffering from a psychological or neuropsychological disorder at the time of the attack, the prosecutor’s statement said. It added that the decision to send him to trial could be appealed.

The four children were reported to be in stable condition shortly after the attack on 8 June 2023. One was Dutch and the other two were French nationals from the eastern region of Haute-Savoie.

Two adults were also injured and were later said to be out of danger.
