U.S. federal immigration officers shot and wounded a man in New York’s Bronx on Thursday while a five-year-old child was in the car. The incident occurred at about 4 p.m. local time. The man’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said officers carried out a targeted operation to detain and arrest a previously convicted citizen of the Dominican Republic. The department said an officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) fired a weapon. DHS also alleged that the man was affiliated with the Dominican-American gang “Trinitarios.”
New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the man had been arrested twice in the city, in 2023 and 2025.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said preliminary information indicated that officers surrounded the car and fired several shots while a child was inside. The boy was not injured. Police later found him with a family member.
“I am angry tonight. Because today ICE shot a New Yorker. They opened fire while his five-year-old child was in the car. ICE is making this city more dangerous. We want them out of here. Now,” Mamdani wrote on social media.
Mamdani said he had spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to discuss the man’s release, but the talks were unsuccessful. The mayor called on ICE to halt its operations in New York.
Pedro Almarez, who works at a nearby restaurant, said he heard gunshots and saw three or four ICE vehicles. According to him, NYPD officers arrived about 10 minutes later, and the man was taken out of the car after an ambulance arrived. One witness said a woman on a balcony shouted to officers, “They’re taking our children.”
Since Trump returned to office in January 2025, at least 21 people have been shot by federal immigration officers, seven of them fatally.
Critics say Trump’s push to increase deportations has led to more violent confrontations and that officers face limited accountability for their actions. Trump says many migrants should be deported and has broadly accused them of fraud and violent crime.
