France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said Champions League matches scheduled in the country this week would not be cancelled despite tensions. The PSG-Barcelona fixture in Paris is among them, RMC Sport reported.

Cancellation of matches not under consideration

Speaking at a news conference at the Hôtel de Matignon alongside Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, Nuñez said cancellation of the PSG-Barcelona match, scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, was not being discussed. He said other European competition fixtures, including a match in Lille, would also go ahead. “The matches are not being cancelled,” the minister stressed.

The PSG-Barcelona match, part of the third round of the Champions League league phase, is due to kick off at 11 p.m. Baku time.

Protests and detentions

Protests are taking place in Paris and other French cities over rising fuel prices and a decline in residents’ purchasing power. Organizers said about 800,000 people had taken part. The Interior Ministry put the figure at 550,000.

In some localities, peaceful demonstrations have escalated into clashes with police and unrest. Nuñez said more than 2,000 people had been detained and that authorities would continue pursuing those involved in looting and theft.
