A criminal investigation has been launched in Paris into suspected sexual harassment committed using smart glasses.
According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, the investigation was opened following complaints about people secretly filming women in the street and sharing the footage on social media without their consent. The prosecutor’s office did not identify the specific brand of device involved.
Reason for the investigation
The prosecutor’s cybercrime unit tested smart glasses two weeks ago to determine what violations of the law the devices could facilitate.
Smart glasses can include cameras, microphones and internet connectivity in a wearable format, allowing users to record and transmit images discreetly. Their use has prompted privacy concerns in several countries, particularly regarding consent, recording in public places and the possible distribution of footage online.
